| The city of Brockville, located 11 km south of the airport, and the town of Prescott, located 18 km east of Brockville, are home to two Royal Canadian Air Cadet squadrons: 870 Vampire Squadron and 661 Lt. W.F. Sharpe Squadron respectively. The goals of the air cadet program are to instill in the youth of Canada the qualities of good citizenship, leadership and physical fitness as well as to generate an interest in aviation and the Canadian Armed Forces. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets accepts anyone between the ages of 12 and 19 years of age. Local training is held one or two evenings a week from September through to the end of June and consists of a wide variety of both mandatory and optional subjects taught by qualified instructors, some of whom are senior cadets. Weekend activities are also scheduled into the program and usually involve full day or multiple day activities such as camp outs, competitions or community service. Summer camps, ranging in content and duration during July and August, augment local training. These camps not only provide an opportunity for travel, making new friends and having fun, but also provide the younger teenagers a chance to experience, in a controlled and supervised environment, what is often their first extended period of time away from home. A select number of older cadets may also attain courses and experiences very few youth programs can offer such as pilot's licenses (both glider and light single engine) and a foreign exchange program. Twice a year each squadron uses the Brockville - 1000 Islands Regional Tackaberry Airport for a day of glider training. The staff of both 661 and 870 Squadrons take particular pride in offering teenagers a program where good, clean fun, discipline and respect for self, others and property are all of equal importance and where the Air Cadet motto of "To Learn, To Serve, To Advance" is constantly aspired to by all.
